‘Sunday. Warmth. Filling the curtain chintz’

Sunday. Warmth. Filling the curtain chintz
are a moving man’s seemly and curt commands
and the soft clunk of bread trays, i.e. what silence is.
My wife’s asleep. Dreaming of trees and garden beds.

Endless is the start of being drawn into this play
of leaves, scent of bread, chintz curtains,
of sun, of the blue morning when I will die,
of Sunday resurrection.

A Lecture /

A Lecture*

Karenina is not to blame.
It’s James Watt and his kettle game;
causality; the pointsman; Count Tolstoi;
the patriarchal order—that’s the boy.

That old bloke speaking French but peasant-garbed?
Her husband? Or that oyster at the English Club?
The unseeing locomotive? Poor Frou-Frou?
Neurosis, then? It’s none of the above.

A guardsman’s gob was all it took;
little Serezha’s mater, you forsook
the sacred dues that motherhood must pay.
Your silk turned scarlet, and that’s why.

Old I’ll Repay willed, all the same,
to drive that overdriven dame
not up to heaven, but down to hell.
(Watt’s pot’s to blame, of course, as well.)

Sapgir /

G. Sapgir 'Animals Exercising,' Moscow, 1970

Sapgir

Now what’s all this? I dreamed I saw Sapgir – a
reception – was it? – in an opulent hall.
So I approach. ‘We used to know each other’,
I say. He didn’t remember me at all.

All round about him clouds were billowing,
with slantwise sliding down of golden rays.
I see – it’s paradise! For that hail-fellow
poet, who always emptied glass and plate.

In suit and tie, he pays me no attention –
he’s checking if his vodka’s running out.
Making no sound, his lips pronounce ‘Hosanna!’
as he floats motionless inside his cloud.

The Flat /

Stockholm, 1987 (Photo: Bengt Jangfeldt)
The Flat

I dreamed of a flat looking out on the palace, on the Neva,
on that golden needle a junkie might see in his dreams.
At first I dreamed I was living there, in that flat.
But then I dreamed that this place was beyond my means.

I dreamed (getting riled) that in this place there would live
thieving bureaucrats, lickspittle courtiers, criminal scum,
or pop-music trash. I dreamed it was time to leave.
But then I dreamed that a dream may well be redone.

And then in this dream I went to the window once more,
and beneath me saw clouds, and golden domes and spires,
and then in this dream I dreamed I would fall asleep here,
being so high up, with the lift still not authorised.

A Change in the Weather /

A Change in the Weather

The rain has stopped. The storm is over now.
The thunder’s rolled off to another sky.
Swifts circle round about, casting their vote
for the rule of freedom – NEP or something like.

He’s basking like a NEPman, is that slug.
Sunshine gold pieces spark his sleazy track.
And then a jay flits by, like a sky-blue
Hispano-Suiza, yenta in the back.

(Translation © G.S. Smith)

From Childhood / С детства

Lev Loseff with his father, 1941 /

From Childhood

Pinned prostrate by a nightmare – Arzamas, no –
it was in Petersburg – no, Moscow – where
he’s thinking, but with only his bone marrow
and cerebellum, turned to mush from fear.

The child is sorry for his personal body,
his tears, eyes, fingers, nails – poor little things –
sensing the nature of the power unbounded
that nature has to purge us human beings.

The years go by. Then, camouflaged all over,
here’s August, come to do the old man in.
The boy that was, though, feels no dread whatever,
there’s even something now that makes him grin.

(Translation © G.S. Smith)

Iron, Grass /

Iron, Grass

The grass didn’t half shoot up while I was sleeping!
There was I keeping snug, and now I’m sent far away—
railway sleepers, fissured, smelling of warm creosote,
and weeds so tall you can see neither points nor rail.

What to do, half asleep? Perhaps I should down a potion,
a badwater brew that catches the evil eye?
Evolution dead-end where no train whistle sounds, where rust
is creeping along, and dust is piling high.

But beware! The links of a cast-iron chain give a shudder,
and then something—its dirty-glass crunch, its rusty-metallic din
convulsing the depot—comes crawling out,
takes a look round, thinks better, and crawls back in.

Life held up two great big juicy fingers /

Life held up two great big juicy fingers,
so here you are,
stuck out in Ultima Thule, but you’ve still got
your samovar.

All those offcuts, dottings, things done hastily
(parenthetically),
will come in useful here to keep the fire blazing,
or rekindle it.

Blue-grey transparent, sweet, hearth-homey – something
wreathes round about.
And something hot, so hot it’s scalding
comes pouring out.

(I am grateful to Olga Sventsitskaia for help with explicating this poem, GSS.

Ultima Thule

Reptilian / Гад

Reptilian

When I drew out my drawer
(what makes what come to mind?)
out came creepy-crawly,
leaving nothing behind.

Where’s my MS with message,
my wordwithwordweft?
It’s repast, reptile-relished.
Snaky smirk as he left.

I’m hissed at and whistled at,
fooled, true to form:
my manicured manuscript
wolfed by a worm.

A wee walkie-talkie,
and I’d air an appeal
for a pint-sized St George
with a sharp little spear.

Mini-horrendosaurus
I’d swat if I could.
Snout smeared with cyrillic,
and fangs bathed in blood.

(Translation © G.S. Smith)

Aloof in Ceasar’s Empire, by Quentin Brand

Joseph Brodsky: A Literary Lifeby Lev Loseff, trans. Jane Ann Miller
Yale, 2012

In his essay “Writing,” from The Dyer’s Hand, W.H.Auden writes: “The condition of mankind is, and always has been, so miserable and depraved that, if anyone were to say to the poet: ’For God’s sake, stop singing and do something useful like putting on the kettle or fetching bandages,’ what just reason could he give for refusing? But nobody says this.” At Joseph Brodsky’s trial in 1964, the judge did, although not in so many words:

The Spanish Scene is on Our Side /

The Spanish Scene is on Our Side

                                    A journalist came to Madrid...
                                                         Vladimir Lifshits

With my wife I spun round the Spanish tourist circuit,
drank the bad wine, nibbled the fast-time fare;
as if reading a book in too modern a version,
and too late by far.

From melancholy Barcelona boulevards with their patrician
porticoes, south to the olive groves of Andalus
(giving the short-fuse Basques short shrift) and
on to wordless

Alhambra arabesques, like letters never posted,
and dark reflections in Arabic-ripple pools, then to real
letters scattered about the frozen, dung-spotted
trenches at Teruel.

Of that forgotten war, that first one, what are they screaming?
About that war in which my father wished to die,
why are they silent? Left unsigned, but sealed by
hoof and tyre.

Barely audible — “…beware, the Communists are traitors…”
“… Moroccan firing squad…” — the rustling undertones.
…We strolled, we gawped, we cheerfully traded
our Euronotes.

Next to the word “Spain” let’s put a tick, “done that”,
and have a little drink. And then, why not, OK
that Spanish girl to do her gypsy rat-tat-tat
flamenco.
