Stanzas /

Stanzas

The way the planets are set out,
and coffee grounds say nothing brighter—
they’re telling us there is no God,
also, that angels aren’t almighty.

And all the other sorts of sign—
the omens, portents, suchlike markers—
do not explain a bloody thing,
but only douse it all in darkness.

And every thought inside my head
hops round and round with no connection,
and all the poems my pals have penned
are short on form and short on function.

Then, when I’m going round the town,
for work, or nothing in particular,
the vowel ‘u’ from all around
is all my jaded ear can capture.

Language, like some clapped-out old truck,
or a sick bitch scowling defiance,
has lost its grammar, and got stuck
with sounds between which there’s no difference.

The fool you hear from miles away,
the bore who corners you and chunners—
it’s empty nonsense, all they say,
the words swill round, then down a funnel,

a gurgle, and they’re gone for good,
mixed in with all-pervasive crying.
Despite all this, though, overhead,
still there, a whispering wing is flying.

Wooden Hut / Изба

Wooden Hut

Warmth—if that’s something you badly want,
sell your soul to the devil, seems the thing to do;
sharpening his pencil, Immanuel Kant
will sketch out four corners for me and you.

Hard to get used to, warmth after cold,
old Dostoevsky, though, managed it right—
icon in corner per custom of old,
axe in another, as much sanctified.

Candle and stove, and ceiling and floor.
Someone outside, though, flits like a moth,
and through the window, prying eyes score
our insignificant brightness and warmth.
