Refusing an Invitation /

Refusing an Invitation

Writing gets harder as my days decline.
Feebler the sound, and firmer the self-discipline.
So as my days run out it isn’t fine
for one like me to prop up that ‘paleeceman’.

This is not why I did my time in hell,
my back bent double as I learned my tradecraft—
to see myself set out on the same shelf
as some half-witted speech-impediment ranter.

A festival, you say? Be damned to that!
There’s ten of us at most writing in Russian.
It’s not our business if some stupid twat
mangles the language with his filibluster.

Author’s Note: When I refer to the ‘paleeceman’, I have in mind not D.A.Prigov, a talented artist in the broad sense of the word, my one and only meeting with whom has left a very pleasant memory, but people who think that infantile linguistic babbling is enough on its own, such as A.B., Sh.R. and T.P. The fifth and sixth lines quote a quatrain by Aleksandr Gitovich that I’ve remembered since I was a child: ‘This was not why I spent time in hell/my back always bent over my trade—/so some windbag’s baggage-train squeezebox/might lead me by the nose’. Gitovich was targeting the Party favourites Tvardovsky and A.А.Prokofiev, and he was given a rough time as a result.

Translator’s Note: The phonetically spelled policeman (милицанер) appears in several of the short lyrics turned out in manic abundance by the Moscow poet, sculptor, and performance artist Dmitrii Aleksandrovich Prigov (1940-2007). Aleksandr Gitovich (1909-66) was a Leningrad poet and translator, a close friend of Losev’s father, the poet Vladimir Lifshits (1913-78).

My Book /

1961

My Book

Not to Rome, nor the world, nor the century,
nor to a rapt hall, but instead
off it goes to the Lethe library,
as nasty Nabokov said.

In the freezing time of winter
(do I hear ‘Once upon a time?’)
I see a slope down to a river
and there it is trying to climb—

my life-waggon, strength expended,
a cart full of kindling, no more.
So, library of Lethe, get ready
to take this as my final score.

All these years I’ve been straining my voicebox,
and here’s the reward for my toil—
not tossed into Charon’s ferryboat,
but stuck in a bookshelf. That’s all.
