‘Sleep came straight off, no need for any prompting’ / «

‘Sleep came straight off, no need for any prompting’

Sleep came straight off, no need for any prompting,
and dreams began their shuffling to and fro.
The world they shaped was beautiful and tempting;
I mooched around inside it like a fool.

I buttonholed the dead in fevered speeches,
grabbed several late lamenteds by the coat.
An alkie’s pathos, a prophet’s beseeching
churned up in me; I told them all what’s what.

I cancelled ‘absent’ and abolished ‘distant’;
I moved myself to tears, like at a film.
With alkie’s courage and prophet’s insistence
I then woke up. Grey light of day looked in.

Grey light of day: that’s me. Illuminating
geraniums, two spindly chairs, some fail-
-ing dreams, an office-reject sort of table,
on which there stands a minus-sign still life:

tumbler unfinished, table lamp left on, a
phone bill left unpaid, an envelope
with no address or stamp or cancellation.
Backdrop to someone on a sheet stretched prone.
