Insobriety

‘Look—left-hand corner, then right… in that space,
yes, where our Christmas tree once stood in place,
next on the shelf we’ve got Soloviov’s portrait,
wild undergrowth round the mouth and the face’.
I can’t see anything like that at all, at
least near the Antichrist author, alas’.

‘Some light might help, it’s as dark as a sack!’
‘See it? Freud standing there clad in hardback,
next to him Jung with innocuous twaddle—
sort of a shining-through boundary track,
time’s what it is, seeping down like a thread of
drool from a sleeping mouth open a crack’.

‘Where did you get them, delusions like that?’
‘Must be from childhood; a case I could add—
when they tried teaching us “waltz Boston fashion”,
music celestial we came by instead’.
‘Daydreaming’s all that you got a pass in,
better ease up on the alcohol, lad!’

‘Long-matured liquor with ice and some wa-
-ter I blend, with that pseudo-saint there
smiling at me, in his leatherette finery…’
‘Don’t go away, don’t… Where? Stay where you are!’
‘I’m sailing off on a fantasy ice floe,
piloted by an invisible star’.

Antichrist’ refers to ‘A Concise Narrative of the Antichrist’, the third section of ‘Three Conversations’ (1899) by Vladimir Soloviov (1853-1900), which predicts the rise and eventual fall of ‘Panmongolism’. More to the point here, perhaps, is a passage in part 1, section VI of Soloviov’s most famous work, The Justification of the Good (1897): ‘As regards drink, common sense forbids the use of strong drink leading to the loss of reason. The principle of asceticism, of course, demands more than that. In general, drink raises the energy of the nervous system and through that of the life of the mind; at the lower stages of spiritual development, where fleshly motives remain the dominant power in the soul, everything that stimulates and enhances the nervous energy that serves the soul, promotes this dominant fleshly element, and consequently is extremely harmful for the spirit; therefore in this situation it is essential to abstain completely from ‘wine or strong drink’ (Leviticus, 10, 9). But at the higher stages of moral life, which were attained in the pagan world by Socrates, for example (see Plato, The Symposium), the energy of the organism serves spiritual rather than fleshly ends, and an increase in nervous activity (of course, within limits, not so as to affect bodily health) strengthens the action of the spirit and consequently may be to a certain degree not only harmless but even directly useful. The universal and unconditional rule remains the same: maintain spiritual sobriety and clarity of consciousness’.
