M / M

M

M-M-M-M-M-M: brick grimace, teeth
on gums the colour of minced beef that’s going
off. Then a halfway march proclaims his showing,
the halfway corpse above the corpse-in-chief.

So come on, Kappeltooter, hit a high,
so that their bones rattle beneath the asphalt—
cutlet of Stalin, rotted through with malice,
croquettes Kalinin, various volaille.

M-M-M-M-M-M. That’s Kremlin wall,
macabre mist and Muscovite moo-mooing.
But now a policeman cautions me, reproving,
that to make water isn’t nice at all

on grass so close to that immortal path
whose every cobblestone had witnessed Lenin.
Offence to fellow feelings. He relented,
this decent copper, though, and let me pass.

This holiday means booze, expenditure.
Balloons fly high, blown up with halitosis,
all Moscow jiggles underneath a rosy
peignoir. But then, it’s only once a year.

On clothing girls alone for these affairs
vast swaths of lowgrade red stuffs are expended,
while youths, the ginger- and the curly-headed,
display their hairstyles from unbuttoned flies.

We get an annual binge when all can come.
Hip-hip, the paper rose of demonstrations.
Big bad authority’s keen ministrations
for weary heads soon light the letter M.

A city. Portraits, jackets buttoned up.
Behold the streets. Behold the lowly dwellings.
The food that won’t lie quiet in your belly.
Sticks bearing sweet pink rooster lollipops.

Behold an advertising pillar — no,
a female, similar outside and inside,
and leaning on her through ’til morningtide —
three pygmies from Lumumba Fiendship U.

The ‘M’ in the sixth stanza refers to the signs at the entrances to the stations of the Moscow Metro, switched on at dusk.

‘Rooster lollipops’ (ledentsovye petushki): Losev refers to a treat fondly remembered by many who spent their childhood in Soviet Russia.

The final line refers to the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, founded in 1960 for students from the developing nations, in 1961 renamed in honour of the assassinated Congolese Prime Minister; since 1992 it has commonly been known in English as RUDN (from Rossiiskii universitet druzhby narodov).

М

Forward one. Backward two. Forward one. /

Forward one. Backward two. Forward one.
Gypsy song. Yiddish fiddler sawing.
To these strains, finding life pretty awful,
the folk would be tying one on
(having put up with Mongol oppression,
Five Year Plans, fiddly spelling revision,
alien script that was dumped by the Serbs;
somewhere Poles went on plotting secession,
with the Skaters’ Waltz backing his mission,
Metternich did his dance against us;
same old potholes wherever you travel;
Pushkin perished in vain—woman trouble;
Dostoevsky kept muttering ‘Bobok’;
Stalin, not a nice man, in Siberia
wouldn’t split his spare grub with his nearest,
then escaped on his own, dirty dog).
What’s been lost won’t return, that’s for certain.
Gypsy, sing! Yiddle fiddle, let loose!
If anyone still has a shirt on,
rip it, if you can’t flog it for booze.

сербской грамоты чуждый навал;
Меттерних против нас танцевал;
под асфальтом все те же ухабы;
Пушкин даром пропал, из-за бабы;
Достоевский бормочет: бобок;
