How sunny the day when guests are due!
They’ll be here any time, to tell us what’s new,
to bring bulging bags of prezzies,
then a shared conflagration will burn right through
when we knock back that starting measure.

The talk will get faster and faster still,
like the whirling sails of Schubert’s windmill
there’s nothing that it won’t pick up,
and our far-away foe will fall fatally ill,
he’ll hiccup and hiccup and hiccup.

New Information Concerning Karl and Klara /

New Information Concerning Karl and Klara

Karl collared Klara’s
corals, then scraped away his ’tache, and scooted
nach Osten. Told tall tales. And he got mocked.
Flogged off his fur coat and his clock (‘cuckoo!’) to
the Russians. Right away the clock got crocked.
There’s more cicatrix lips, though, in green woods,
than you can count, and they’ve chattered enough
about the German lumberjack who went all Russ-
-ian — drinking, singing, axe behind the stove.

Klara collared
Karl’s clarinet, considering it comic,
and there and then she packed the thing away,
but kept the case, then after that this Gothic
maid rather liked to unlock it now and again.
The clouds came by, quite cumulus and curly,
inexorably coming from the east,
but still no snow would fall, so nothing really
came coursing down onto that coral breast.

Mein Gott!
A kind of dark-pink curlicue, indeed—
coralled tongue-twisters by the crooked score,
and folksy parapraxis à la Freud,
on love, leaving, music, and metaphor!

nach Osten.

Mein Gott!
