The Miraculous Raid /

Nina Mokhova-Loseff, Vladimir Gerasimov, Natasha Sharymova (Vainer), Lev Loseff ca. 1960

The Miraculous Raid

Things were going like they usually go.
Tormented by longing for weekend,
grinding round in their trams went the folk;
tormented by longing for sweeties,

nursery kids trudged back from parade.
Then a unit of God’s own angels,
a celestial miraculous raid,
descended on Leningrad-Hades.

Bazooka shells blast Hermitage
shrubbery. Shouts of ‘Hosanna!’
Already they’ve seized every bridge,
the stations, the ‘Quisisana’.

The bolts of the jail swept aside
by grenades and the Word Almighty.
Its hostages somewhat surprised —
caught asleep,
                       or pie-eyed,
                                         or in nightwear.

Over here! Mikhail, Leonid,
three women, Yurii, Volodyas!
Our transport heads west, at full speed.
You’re free now, for we are victorious.

The rustle of wings bearing wounds
dragging along the pavement.
The unit lobs mortar rounds
to cover our chopper’s movement.

But strength, like wax, melts and droops,
the angelic unit’s exhausted,
forced back by security troops
grimly shuffling home from their workday.

We rise up, we’re headed away,
dissolving in fading heavens.
Beneath us patrol flashlights play
in Ulyanka, Grazhdanka, Entebbe.

Midnight embers smouldering down
like the farewell stripe of a sunset —
the pontoon bridge we had blown
on a sandbar not far from Kronstadt.

The Quisisana was a restaurant at 44 Nevsky Prospekt, in the centre of St Petersburg; it closed in 1914, but the name persisted for the various eating-places that subsequently occupied the site. The restaurant is mentioned in many literary memoirs. At present the café ‘Sever’ (‘North’) is located at this address.

In the fifth stanza, LL refers to some of his closest literary friends: Mikhail Eremin, 1936-; Leonid Vinogradov, 1936-2004; Yurii Mikhailov, 1933-90, Vladimir Gerasimov, 1935-2015, and Vladimir Uflyand, 1937-2007. One of the ‘three women’ must be Loseff’s wife Nina Mokhova; another is probably Natalya Vainer (now Sharymova, once the ‘significant other’ of Gerasimov); the identity of the third is uncertain. I am grateful to Dimitry Loseff for advice on this question.

Ulyanka and Grazhdanka are districts of Petersburg. ‘Entebbe’ evidently refers to the hostage rescue at the airport there by Israeli commandos on 4 July 1976.

‘Yes, I know—Tatar yoke, years of famine, / ‘

‘Yes, I know—Tatar yoke, years of famine,
no democracy though ages passed by,
but that naff Russian spirit’s the main thing’—
said this poet to me,—‘I can’t abide.
All those sweet little showers and birches,
those aaaghs about folks gone before’—
and the poet pulled a face meant to hurt you,
twisting delicate lips in a sneer.
He went on, getting more and more shirty,
‘I detest them, those drink-sodden nights,
the drunkards’ remorseful sincerity,
Dostoevsky split-soul of the narks,
dear old vodka and dear little mushrooms,
cute young girlies and cute little sins,
then when dawn comes, instead of a wash-down
we get Blok with his watery lines;
the guitar poets with lances of cardboard
and their stage-actor’s frog in the throat,
our iambs, flat-footed and vapid,
and trochees that trundle, not trot;
stuff held sacred’s insultingly batty,
all set up for the simpletons,
and that life-giving river, pure Latin,
took a course that went right past us.
All too true — it’s the land of nogoodniks,
there’s not even a decent gents’—
like Chaadaev almost, that lunatic,
my poet unexpectedly ends.
But his Russian speech, fluent quicksilver,
made him skirt round some matter of weight,
and he seemed to stare over the river,
where an archangel’s trump died away.

водянистые Блока стишки;
и хореев худых хромоту;

Interpreting Tselkov /

Nina Loseff with Tselkov's 'Goldfish '57' ca. 1958

Interpreting Tselkov

Hemp-rope hairiness, candle wax.
A face with a backside over.
What remains, do your best to extract
from the flame, the murk, and the puther.

Now there’s only a menacing trace,
in the black flame-memento of colour,
of Tselkov in his ‘scutcheon’ phase,
Latin larvae, or ‘masks’ as we call them.

Instead of landscapes and flowers,
these masks, with their rips and punctures,
like placards for pointless fuss,
used to hang there in Soviet apartments.

And though they were eyeless, they’d spy—
anti-icons they might be accounted—
on rebarbative days flying by,
shots of rotgut, and laws being flouted.

But paintbrush and pencil still
make a movement from cycle to cycle.
Tselkov’s pictures gave rise to a soul,
with a butterfly’s yellow its signal.

From these do-you-in larval sheaths,
(God forbid you should dream them at nighttime)
if you look, you can see it steal
through an eye socket with no eye in.

So here it alights on a nail,
and there it flicks by like lightning.
On candle, hemp rope, overall.
Even places you can’t descry it.

From Чудесный десант (The Miraculous Raid), 1985

The eminent artist Oleg Tselkov (b. 1934) studied theatre arts in Leningrad in the 1950s, and moved in the same circles as Lev Loseff and his literary friends at that time; they were involved in several well-documented escapades. Tselkov moved to Moscow in 1958, and then to Paris in 1977.
