The ‘Factory’ Waltz /

The ‘Factory’ Waltz

Who knows what you’ll find on the shoreline?
No end to the stuff washing up.
You might be out taking a stroll, and
behold, here comes Kruzenshtern’s ship.
He’s bringing an Admiralty order
to shut down our factory,
to pardon our wicked marauding,
and send us off back to St P.

But the tars lie around with their biddies
on feather beds. ‘Stand To’ not piped.
For he’s still no more than a middie,
that admiral, saviour of lives.
He’s young — unpardonably, utterly,
he’s waltzing and swilling Cliquot.
His clipper is spiked like a butterfly
on that spire. And there’s so far to go.

From Чудесный десант (The Miraculous Raid), 1985
Baron Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern (Adam Johann von Krusenstern, 1770-1846), the Baltic German-born admiral, commanded the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe in 1803-6, and wrote an account of it that was translated into many languages.
