An aquarium on Christmas Eve. This can
make possible contacting the impossible.
Here comes a blasphemous rhyme, alas…
                                                            Be damned!
I’m well sick of the tastelessness of blasphemy.

This Christmas Eve, in its dark blueness it
would seem to be a word or else an icon.
Inside it there are shoals of angels, luminous
in green, in white, in rosy red, and lilac.

An aquarium it is, with green and gold,
with lilac, rosy red, white, luminescent.
Against the glass you want to press your brow,
your eyes, your lips – to the word get closer as it

becomes the deed.
                            Foreheads come floating up
towards the glass, eyes stare, and eyelids flutter;
perhaps they’re singling out among the mob
that man who’s standing closer than he ought to.

Unfinished Gogol /

Unfinished Gogol

He beckons his father-confessor Matvei
to the alcove he’ll soon meet his end in.
‘What if chisellingchichikov’s sitting in jail?
The souls left behind will be deader.’

Vol. 2 with Greek prince having auto-da-fé’d,
the fire’s burning down to embers,
for we all prefer being well watered and fed
at tea parties with looped little fingers.

That troika will gallop through forest and steppe,
pounding hooves over roads paved with branches;
in his kennel at night, Sobakevich will yap
and sigh, and set his chain clanking.

(Translation © 2012 GS Smith)

2 Brodsky St*

Verlaine, in free translation –
‘Grungy workmen
canted grand pianos
out of thickset trucks’.
That’s like our ordained situation –
we’ve spent ages lurking
behind another person
in music’s tracks.

We’ll lick away the pointless teardrops.
What’s the good if you don’t have access?
We’re like low-value diamonds
crushed by the king of hearts.
So, we won’t be hearing
Mozart, Haydn, or Bach, even less
shall we blend into the melos,
or find out which plays first part –

ethics or aesthetics,
or that bluebird over the water.
From the Almighty we’ve been demanding,
calling on the Creator for,
any extra tickets.
‘Spare ticket, anyone?’ Here,
behind the marble of the Marble
Palace, entreaties fail.

A white night. The night is white.
Shirtfront in vee of formal jacket.
Black А minors in love with white Cs.
Richter’s fleeting smile
from the chalky darkness
within a black water-taxi.

Streets making a keyboard.
In groups we wended
along the stave of an allée,
like Chopin’s chords.
What remained was literature, no more,
for the song had ended.
And since then, gradually
we’ve become deaf and coarse.

Captions to Pictures Seen in Childhood

1

He offered prayers to the One on High,
that he might find shelter before evening,
but when he clambered up along the pass,
it seemed as if there were no way down.

The sombre artist had engraved
the crests of the pines in the depths of the ravine,
the swell of boulders cloaked in snow,
where yesterday the landslide had feasted.

The snow flew on, and thoughts flew back,
a St. Bernard lumbered into his dream
with a certain drink, so to slip sweetly
into sound sleep, smothered by the snow.

2

The windfallen brush, clad in tatters,
guards the marsh’s pools and moss,
and a future saint of Christianity
stopped short in the bushes and drops his arbalest.

He’s even opened his mouth slightly,
rubs his brow, not believing his eyes,
having seen the shining revelation of the cross
between the antlers of the trustful animal.

And how does the engraver represent the light?
By what is around the warp and woof of the strokes,
while the light itself and cross are only
the trace of the absence of its faint touch.

3

A stroke – this sloop is listing too steeply.
The sail is ripped to shreds. The cliffs are too close.
Murk. Storm. Wind. Rain. And too close the shore,
with its seaweed, its boulders, its spray.

A stroke is murk. A stroke is storm. A stroke is rain. A stroke the howl of wind.
The steep list. The steep shore. All the cliffs are too steep.
Only one tiny minute dot of light:
the porthole of the stern cabin.

There one can see a tiny passenger,
as if he notices nothing,
he’s laid a book before him,
it lies there, and he reads it.

4

A snake, coiling upon itself in a pit,
and a body intertwined with another body, –
the engraver, not up to Doré,
must have made the coils too heavy.

Tilt the picture, even turn yourself about,
but something remains strange about the coils,
you can’t figure out whether the picture’s
downward or upward spirals fill it more powerfully.

How, O artist, did you pull it off?
What’s the difference, above or below! When the tangle
of these interwoven bodies snaps back to shape:
the spool of Heaven and the funnel of Hell.

5

There’s frost on the windows and ice in the canals,
and autos cough as if caught cold,
Europe sends its last warmth
to her frontier city, on the edge of the tundra.

There the city lights barely save
the skaters in the twilight.
Everyone knows, on Christmas Eve
dangerous visitations are possible.

A rosebush is transformed into an icebush.
While under the window, at the very edge of the engraving,
sullen Lapps drive their reindeer teams.

Someday I’ll return there.

1

‘Sunday. Warmth. Filling the curtain chintz’

Sunday. Warmth. Filling the curtain chintz
are a moving man’s seemly and curt commands
and the soft clunk of bread trays, i.e. what silence is.
My wife’s asleep. Dreaming of trees and garden beds.

Endless is the start of being drawn into this play
of leaves, scent of bread, chintz curtains,
of sun, of the blue morning when I will die,
of Sunday resurrection.

A Lecture /

A Lecture*

Karenina is not to blame.
It’s James Watt and his kettle game;
causality; the pointsman; Count Tolstoi;
the patriarchal order—that’s the boy.

That old bloke speaking French but peasant-garbed?
Her husband? Or that oyster at the English Club?
The unseeing locomotive? Poor Frou-Frou?
Neurosis, then? It’s none of the above.

A guardsman’s gob was all it took;
little Serezha’s mater, you forsook
the sacred dues that motherhood must pay.
Your silk turned scarlet, and that’s why.

Old I’ll Repay willed, all the same,
to drive that overdriven dame
not up to heaven, but down to hell.
(Watt’s pot’s to blame, of course, as well.)

Sapgir /

G. Sapgir 'Animals Exercising,' Moscow, 1970

Sapgir

Now what’s all this? I dreamed I saw Sapgir – a
reception – was it? – in an opulent hall.
So I approach. ‘We used to know each other’,
I say. He didn’t remember me at all.

All round about him clouds were billowing,
with slantwise sliding down of golden rays.
I see – it’s paradise! For that hail-fellow
poet, who always emptied glass and plate.

In suit and tie, he pays me no attention –
he’s checking if his vodka’s running out.
Making no sound, his lips pronounce ‘Hosanna!’
as he floats motionless inside his cloud.

The Flat /

Stockholm, 1987 (Photo: Bengt Jangfeldt)
The Flat

I dreamed of a flat looking out on the palace, on the Neva,
on that golden needle a junkie might see in his dreams.
At first I dreamed I was living there, in that flat.
But then I dreamed that this place was beyond my means.

I dreamed (getting riled) that in this place there would live
thieving bureaucrats, lickspittle courtiers, criminal scum,
or pop-music trash. I dreamed it was time to leave.
But then I dreamed that a dream may well be redone.

And then in this dream I went to the window once more,
and beneath me saw clouds, and golden domes and spires,
and then in this dream I dreamed I would fall asleep here,
being so high up, with the lift still not authorised.

A Change in the Weather /

A Change in the Weather

The rain has stopped. The storm is over now.
The thunder’s rolled off to another sky.
Swifts circle round about, casting their vote
for the rule of freedom – NEP or something like.

He’s basking like a NEPman, is that slug.
Sunshine gold pieces spark his sleazy track.
And then a jay flits by, like a sky-blue
Hispano-Suiza, yenta in the back.

(Translation © G.S. Smith)
