Unfinished Gogol

He beckons his father-confessor Matvei

to the alcove he’ll soon meet his end in.

‘What if chisellingchichikov’s sitting in jail?

The souls left behind will be deader.’

Vol. 2 with Greek prince having auto-da-fé’d,

the fire’s burning down to embers,

for we all prefer being well watered and fed

at tea parties with looped little fingers.

That troika will gallop through forest and steppe,

pounding hooves over roads paved with branches;

in his kennel at night, Sobakevich will yap

and sigh, and set his chain clanking.

Неоконченный Гоголь

Поманив его пальцем в предсмертный алков,

исповеднику скажет Матвею:

Ну и что, что в тюрьме предприимчичиков,

остальные лишь стали мертвее.

Догорает костер, на который взошел

том второй с его греческим принцем,

потому что милей нам запой и зажор

чаепитий с вертлявым мизинцем.

Да копыта побив о жердистую гать,

будет тройка скакать лесостепью,

по ночам в конуре собакевич брехать

и вздыхать, и позвякивать цепью.
