The Pier that Disappeared /

Morton Street Pier ca.1983 and Now / Пирс на Мортон-стрит около 1983 года и сейчас

The Pier that Disappeared

A grey warship reflected in dark blue.
Couples who calmly bill and coo,
both hetero and homo;
plus what by any water you always find:
an old geezer at the end of his line.
This is where we felt at home.

The planking had seen better days. The warship
permanently docked, refashioned
as a catering school.
The waves lap. The cub cooks laugh.
Disappearing round the curve, barges plough
swift and smooth.

This is where we used to come, he and I.
My friend who adored water of any kind,
as I do too—well, sort of.
Now, all that has been and gone, disappeared, passed on.
Why do the lapping waves taunt me so?
Why do they tell tall stories?

To be and to go; that’s what water is for.
To come here sober was no good at all—
I should have got pie-eyed.
What is ‘here and now’ was ‘later’ then.
So I stare dully at a concrete skeleton.
The pier has disappeared.

New Translation: The Elephant /

The elephant at the zoo is going to die,
like a liner towed off to the breaker’s yard;
he used to wave his trunk, but that’s gone by,
stamping to please the children is too hard.
The elephant at the zoo is going to die,
which makes Mr Head Keeper sad at heart –
what other beast could ever play his part
and act as clever and as big as he?
What else could touch your soul and make you glad,
and fill his cage the way he used to do?
There’s parrots and there’s monkeys by the shed-
load. What’s the point? No elephant – no zoo!

About "The Elephant" /

Elephant pin from the Leningrad Zoo

An excerpt from Radio Liberty's program "Over the Barriers," hosted by Alexander Genis.
Episode: What do the Literary Animals Talk About? Air Date: 11/25/1999

Alexander Genis: Lev Vladimirovich, our meetings in the studio cannot end without discussing your poems. I hope that today we will finish this conversation with your animalistic verses.

Lev Loseff: I don’t have too many animalistic poems. …. I do remembered a little poem I wrote before I started writing poetry* while still a university student**, when I was practicing a little versification. I haven’t managed to write anything worthwile during those years, but for some reason there was one poem, which is simply called the "Elephant." It was the only poem from those days that my friends liked, and even, to my great surprise, I found it later published in samizdat, in various passed-around notebooks, and in hand-reproduced albums. I even saw it in Siberia once, it was attributed to someone called “Slutsky.” I do not know why this simple, childish rhyme intrigued my friends at that time. So, here’s a little poem called "The Elephant:"

The elephant at the zoo is going to die,
like a liner towed off to the breaker’s yard;
he used to wave his trunk, but that’s gone by,
stamping to please the children is too hard.

(Translation © 2013 G.S. Smith)

This poem, by the way, was even liked by chiefs of various literary associations, they even wanted to publish it in some almanac, which to me seemed completely unexpected and improbable. The problem then was that “
by the shed-load”*** was not permitted in print by the censors. And because of this I remember that the late Professor Naumov, head of the literary association and editor-in-chief of “Soviet Writer” in Leningrad, changed my line to “The parrot and monkey cage is full.” But I answered “No, the cage is not full,” and did not agree to the change under any circumstances.
---------

*Loseff often said that he started writing poetry in the 1970s and usually dismissed most of what he wrote earlier as juvenilia.

**1954 – Age 17

***The Russian phrase “do khrena” (up to the horseradish, i.e. penis), a mildly vulgar slang term meaning “more than enough,” “too much,” “in excess” is somewhat similar to the English mildly vulgar expression “
shedload/shitload."

The Extended Day and Other Memories of Cold Weather

VII

Euterpe and Melpomene would meanwhile
be tuning up their tooting instruments,
then up would bob the maestro like a sealion
out of the icehole that the spotlight melts,
a soloist all spiffed up like a penguin
slides to position on the stage’s floe,
while busily the old crone kappeldiener
hands broadsheets out, like nihilist of yore;
I register this tra-la-la, but meantime
a different object holds my eyes in thrall:
that twinkling crystalline inverted mountain,
that cascade frozen high above the stalls,
whose final spark of light was soon to die,
and nothing I can do will make it stay.

On stage a squire pretends to be a peasant,
the backdrop twitches, light follows the dark,
the music marches us away to prison,
deprives us of our rights, puts us to work;
the heroine wrings her hands (right to the shoulders),
puts bells into our ears and makes them ring,
performs a strip-search of our hearts and souls, and
confiscates each and every sharp-edged thing.

The generals and the ministers and the statesmen
stiff in their boxes. Conversation dies.
The bargirl reads her agitprop-escapist
novel. But no escape from snow and ice.
Napkin. Ice bucket. Buffet iced with marble.
Frosty tall glasses. Snowy pinafores.
A rounded heap of glacier mints, their wrappers
with polar bear on iceberg, lies before.
Oh, how I used to love the chill wide spaces
of foyers bare in January’s first days,
and the soprano screech: ‘My dearest, take me’,
while sunshine strokes the plush of window drapes.

Outside, sole guardians of the Michael Garden
bullfinches, in Suvórov uniform;
two lions, paw-up, strut like their commanders,
with pats of snow up here and on the rump.
Behind, Neva clapped up in chains for winter,
Karelia, Barents puddle not that far,
the source that sends us down this freezing weather—
the basic fact that makes us what we are.
Things stay the way our bronze creator made them;
the colder we, the closer our embrace;
an Ice Palace was built, and when it melted,
we raised the Winter one to take its place.

But all the same, and now I really mean it,
the measured ebb and flow of opera leads
to thinking—if I’ve had a drop too many—
that warm seas are what Russia really needs!

VII

The Extended Day and Other Memories of Cold Weather

VI

My best friend was a semi-foe as well,
a man who would not make his bed, not ever.
You won’t believe this, but we’d talked together
the whole day through. Now, semi-darkness fell;
end of the working day, the murk of March,
two blocks away the ever-present river,
me wishing now that something would deliver
us from the non-stop natter, but I marched
ahead, saying my piece on ethics, ought-tos,
bearing one’s cross—but he had gone adrift.
With arms across and hands gripping his shoulders,
he sat there hunched, like someone frozen stiff.
This purely female gesture quite undid
the straight line of my argument’s direction.
I thought of what wise Gershenzon once said:
‘Deficiency is cognate with perfection’.

The Extended Day and Other Memories of Cold Weather

V

... I worked on Campfire. In that dismal hole,
a long way from the ratrace and newsmakers,
I met a hundred—two, for all I know,
transparent youths and most uncomely maidens.
Down with a cold, they’d creep up to my desk,
and, with a touch of arrogant flirtation,
announce: ‘I’ve brought along a couple of texts.’
An editor, to them I was like Satan.
Shielded behind their vast pretentiousness,
they talked about the text, as taught by Lotman,
as if it were an impenetrable mass,
a slab of concrete with an armature in.
It all was neither fish nor fowl, but verbiage
let down with limpness so it turned to mush;
but all the same, from time to time I managed
to print this nonsense. God will be my judge.

Frost. In the Tauride Garden, sunset stripe
showed yellow, and the snow beneath was rosy.
And people’s idle chatter as they stride
was monitored by vigilant Morózov—

Pavlik, the one who did that evil deed.
The chipboard portrait of this Pioneer
has chipped off from the cold, but still, indeed
they have it cosy.

                            Time went on ahead.
The first day of another month approached, and
the secretary counts out our paltry screw.
And time went on, begging nobody’s pardon,
and landed everyone in a different do.
Now, some get stoned on strong tea in the GULag,
some in the Bronx make war upon the roach;
in mental homes yet others cluck and cuckoo,
brushing the baby devils from their coats.

The young man, all agog with love and fast-approaching
Death...
V. Zhukovsky

Above a lake in which one might well drown,
along a road where one might be knocked down,

beneath a sky of con-trail dash and dot
I saw a horse pulling a rickety cart,
and realised as I watched that herbivore
that these components made up something more.
This entire scene was like my native parts—
where hay is fragrant and the dogs do bark,
toasts raised to Russia, carp hooked on the line,
where Klava walks out with her Nikolai,
and where there are so many friends of mine.
One in particular sprang to my mind.

Even for Moscow, this frost was a hard one.
My friend was sober, pensive, flush with dough.
He split his banknotes into two big handfuls.
Reflected, then decided to take both.
We went to the top restaurant in the city,
they let us in, although they had their doubts;
we wheedled the best table, set up business,
and hangers-on immediately turned out.
Much gravitas was gained as platters emptied—
not by my friend, for he was growing light,
turning into a quite amazing mentor,
with plans to set the entire world to rights.
Stretching himself to his considerable measure,
to clashing forks, and also kitchen stink,
he said: ‘Behold, my friends, once more we’re beggars,
and this will be our final farewell drink!
Let’s toast the planets on their constant way,
Pushkin, the Russians and their friends the Jews,
let’s bring good news to all who stand and wait,
and tell them there’s no death, and never was.

The Extended Day and Other Memories of Cold Weather

Our palms and throats still tickly from applauding
a play by Shvarts in cringing-comic mode;
someone has been dispatched, clutching the token,
to get the galoshes from the garderobe.
Little me waiting, swaddled to the eyebrows,
for a troika by the Mikhailovsky House,
with crumpled trophy fading in the pocket—
the toffee-paper programme from the show.

The curtain’s down. The lights have all been doused.
The greasepaint washed away. Oakum and horsehair
hung on their nails until the second house.
It’s nice, a theatre with no audience.
After his last-act triumph over evil,
meal-ticketed hero makes for the buffet.
And for us too there is a fine finale—
our tram arrives almost without a wait.

A scarlet dragon coming on, right at us,
two different-coloured eyes burn at its brow.
And all the long long way to Prospekt Gaza
is peristalsis in the monster’s bowel.

The Extended Day and Other Memories of Cold Weather

II

Extended day for close-cropped little noggins
kept in by a stockade of failing scores,
but catapults can’t cross the cordon, so things
for me could be considerably worse.

There’s many ways of holding in the warmth
besides packing the window frames with mastic.
Dimly, as through a darkened pane, I watch
the teacher’s pointer travel downwards, tracking
along the path of birds’ migration route,
observed by dunderhead and lazybones.
South, to the south, it’s always to the south.
This holds in heat better than double glazing.
The Academy of Sciences in vain pursuit
dispatching wireless cables after us.
And then it’s ‘Dr Livingstone, I presume?’
And in response, a groan of happiness.

Where January’s absent from the diary,
shame-saving leaf covers the fount of grief,
stewed monkey meat provides the staple diet,
figs grow on trees, so no-one gives a fig.
We’ll christen these happy islands, these we’ll dub
with names of russified Germans, and thereafter
we’ll sail back to the city on the gulf—
the hemispheres are in my schoolboy atlas.

A yellow-hulled and golden-masted cruiser
is beached within the northern capital.
Her wardroom solid pipe-smoking infusion.
There’s blank-faced portraits hung on every wall.
I mean, all ready for the boy are martial
deportment, sideburn over shoulderboard,
the story of defeating Bonaparte
allied with Nelson,—instead of face, a hole.

The hard-man bosun pipes up with his whistle.
Stewards take orders from the galley cook.
From every portrait down at me is watching
a little specky boy with chubby cheeks.

The Extended Day and Other Memories of Cold Weather

And on that island they preserved the names
of maidens from the princely clan,
from times my heart can not forget
when winter never came.
Nina Mokhova

I

I see it clear: the dacha, the wild roses,
the wooden fence, the gate with rusted latch,
the shiny-wrinkled, baggy summer trousers;
I touch wood, superstitious as I am.
I see it clear: the samovar is fuming
like tsar or some high officer annoyed—
a colonel who’s been fuelled up with fircones,
and shakoed by a plume of lilac smoke.
So near, hold out your hand and you can feel it,
but there’s some sights you don’t care to repeat:
a second shameful battle of Tsushima—
the rising sun spread out on last night’s sheet.

A handsome chap holds forth on the veranda,
a guest for tea, ignoring the preserves,
and speaking words like ‘Universal manhood...
for Aryans respect... Jews to love Jews...
Which way to go? From here it’s one small step—
God’s kingdom or devil’s dictatorship?’

And now it’s back to winter cold. The reindeer
are being rounded up by grim-faced Lapps
in textbook fashion (see p. 23).
‘Soup’s on the stove-top, you can do the spuds’.

Soup on to warm. The spuds are boiling merry.
It’s opera on the radio, no doubt.
I hear it clear: the singers are the Aryans,
the aria’s words I simply can’t make out.

I
