An Amphibronchitic Night 3. Ante lucem / Амфибронхитная ночь 3. Ante lucem

An Amphibronchitic Night

3. Ante lucem

It’s me who should always get picked on?
There’s times even I don’t feel right.
But now I can see there’s a in
the box headed ‘live through this night’.
My heart maybe flew through the window,
bursting out of my chest cavity,
then sat on a branch, chirping ‘It’s so
cold and scary, it’s too dark to see’.
No matter though, day’s started dawning.
The sun’s rising over the eaves,
and filling the piecrust of morning
with that golden nonsense of his.

3. Ante lucem

An Amphibronchitic Night 2. Same Old Dream /

An Amphibronchitic Night

2. Same Old Dream

Not in nature’s bosom, I tell you—
in some chemical grove instead
these nylon hides were collected.
The crowd tarted up in this tat
packs into the tram more hell-bent,
squashing me (very soon I’ll be dead).

The last crop of noble-fur creatures
rests in peace on far Solovki,
so these folks are marked like hyenas,
with spot-spattered, bristly skins.
It’s enough to set your head reeling,
the decomposition stink.

So, onward goes tram number something,
di-dum-di di-dum-di di-dee…
Which standing-up passenger’s snuffed it?
Me. Drag my corpse on down the street.
You’d think they might notice, just somebo-
-dy—nobody does, vacantly

their faces like heels, with no features,
down to tiny-print pages are pegged,
they’ve backhander rissoles in briefcase,
and self-conscious one dozen eggs,
while outside are the rainsoaked leavings
of school and hospital dregs.

Will these unto-authority-harkening
mucky necks ever be unbent?
Glance up at some new phalanstery,
all fourteen stories of it?
But now here’s the driver barking
‘We’re here, off you get…’

An Amphibronchitic Night

1. A Newspaper to Take to Bed

Andropov’s old girl plants a smacker
on granite, a gift from the state,
and the Kremlin wall’s newly blackened
by yet one more insect-like stain.
Old blokes—who should be in the sauna,
steaming what bones they’ve still got,
or slipping their grand-daughter Tanya
a handout of sugary glop,
or, stove-topped in undies at night-time,
should go pop from the grub they’ve packed in,
or else in the house of the Almighty
be entreating remission of sin—
there’s something they’re struggling to tell of,
while massaging paw against paw,
spindly legs betraying their terror
at the last minutes left to them all.
Pathetic they are, these has-beens,
these shit-scared, mumbling old blokes,
with their trivial, insect-like habits,
their heritage black insect-tracks.
Forgive them, O Lord, their elisions,
pray pity this mouldering crew.
Indeed they know not, that’s for certain.
And neither, in fact, do they do.
