Levloseff /

Lev Loseff, 1982, New York, NY (Photo: N. Sharymova)

Levloseff

Levloseff is no poet, no citharist.
A Marinite is he, Velemirist,
a Brodskyite sparse-bearded, specky,
an Osipologist with voicebox squeaky,
he’s vodka-reek,
he’s rubbish-speak.

Levloseffloseffloseffloseffhe
hehehehehehehehe’s a judas,
for Rus he did betray, and now he be-
trays Zion, drinks cologne, he’s someone who does
not distinguish wrong from right,
knows not from where what be,
talks through his hat.

An Annophile, an Alexandromane,
a Fyodorist (we’re turning now to prose),
no novel could be writed by his pen,
much less an article with weighty cause—
he’s not your man!

He hears a ding-ding-ding,
as if someone has been done in
here, ‘east-west…’ people say of it (ho-ho),
it’s not a bell, though, it’s the phone,
he won’t pick up, he’s not at home.

Unto the Gates of Hell /

The Mouth of Hell, 13th Century, MS Tanner 184, The Bodleian Library, University of Oxford

Unto the Gates of Hell

Here we have choir, iconostasis, and a red vacuum
cleaner—it’s ‘The Last Judgement’, say some.
As well as what you might call the major problem
of exactly who gets sucked into this womb.

The ones who’ve only made a misdemeanour,
like turning themselves into a red-wine pool—
they’ll be told a tale with an unpleasant meaning
by Bruin, Provincial Governor of the Pole.

The ones who by their own sin are tormented,
such as the lecher, the loudmouth, the pederast—
their punishment will be lost-in-post letters,
and from visitors no greetings passed.

Journalists, editors (up to heads of sections)
and anyone else who’s played a drudging part—
they’ll get a century-long sentence
of learning Voznesensky by heart,

with second-rate fiddlers wrong-noting Chopin.
But pitch and brimstone there will surely be
from bottomless cauldrons, for those Elabuga people
who wouldn’t spare a penny or a bite to eat.

Translator's note: Elàbuga: the town on the river Kama in Tatarstan, where on 31 August, 1941 Marina Tsvetaeva, shunned and despairing, committed suicide.
