Stanzas /

Stanzas

The arrangement of the planets
and the dismal look of the coffee grounds
tell us there is no God and
the angels are not omnipotent.

And all other characters,
portents, signs and marks
don’t clarify crap,
only drown everything in obscurity.

All the thoughts in my mind
bob around and are disjointed,
and all my friends’ verses
are uncut and uncouth.

When I scurry about the city,
on business or out strolling,
I catch with my accustomed ear
from every side only the sound “uck”.

Overworked like a truck,
whimpering like an ailing bitch,
the language’s been stripped of grammar,
you can’t tell one sound from the next.

The fool yelling from a mile away,
and the windbag drawing you aside,
they’re all speaking emptiness,
the words flow into a funnel,

which gurgled, then was gone entirely,
already merged into a simple howl.
But a wing is still rustling,
fluttering overhead.

Dove l’aria “si arrosa di tegole” /

come tedeschi o giapponesi, incedere;
dove possono nuotare i gatti, i muri – piangere,
senza lasciare sull’acqua traccia alcuna,
mutandoti in malconcio rimorchiatore,

как немцы иль японцы, выступать;

A Cat’s Lament /

A Cat’s Lament

Woe is me, O wretched, hapless me.
Neither in feline nor in mouse will I find succor.
Ah, how dark it is in October, alas, it’s darker
in October than in a Black man’s armpit.

The devil lent me claws on credit.
I tear another day from the calendar.
Wrap me up, O Life, in a neat bundle,
and bear me away on your lap in a tram.

Or, faster yet, in a taxi.
And after surveying the assortment of people,
ask of the old gruff nurse,
“Who’s last in line for being put to sleep?”

"On his birthday, the poet Lev Loseff is watching the poet Joseph Brodsky singing 'Lili Marleen' on TV and drinking a glass of vodka, for his health, as wife Nina dutifully makes sure that Lyosha eats his pickle. Uflyand drew this before departing for the airport in June of 1989."

Pooch /

Pooch

Because a pooch is no big deal—
a wagging tongue, a wagging tail—
I think of me
as like this modest length of fur,
this slightly smelly patch of hair.
I urge with glee

my slippery organ with no bone,
that chews the news away and home—
to do its best!
My little stump of fear and grief,
docked from a tougher piece of meat—
wag nonetheless!

(translation © G.S. Smith)

S.D. / С.Д.

S. D.

I’ve seen him emerge from oblivion,
like a miner out of the pithead,
after downing Lord knows how much over
the odds, a champ like Stakhanov.
Shirt singed by the fires of Hades,
and black in the face with horror.

But cleaned up, laundered, and sober,
a pedant he was, a fusspot—
washing dishes in good hot water,
mopping up the last little dust-mote.
The desk in apple-pie order.
Style and syntax clipped and sorted.

Those nitpicking letters, neatly
notated in tiny penpricks.
I didn’t resent his needling.
For he knew that at any instant
he could plunge back down again, gagging,
to dark filth and revolting chaos.

Poor old D! He had to be ready—
here’s what fuelled his rage for order—
he could never forget that maybe
the next time he might not be able
from the pit up to daylight to haul,
but would choke on his own blood in Hell.

С.Д.
