I turned on the TV and saw a house blown up / Включил TB - взрывают домик

I turned on the TV and saw a house blown up.
It fell open like a volume dropped;
flames victimized
its pitiful quires.
Nimble as a pine marten, ranging
over all the pages,
from the table seizing meat,
making mirrors melt.
What distant scene did they reflect?
What grief did they detect?
What kind of life was gobbled by the searing heat—
novel? poem? dictionary? ABC?
What alphabet did the story use—
ours? Knotted Arabic curlicues?
Hebrew? Roman? No way to know
when something’s going up in smoke.

Self-Portrait with Plant /

Self-Portrait with Plant

I move on now to sketch myself in diadem of dill,

blackcurrant leaf to serve instead of fig.

Tough little pickle, me, but still unpicked.

Over my crown, a putto struts the gopak.

Next item: unfurled, a scroll showing the enfilades

where I taught aliens to read between the lines.

(I didn’t see, fool that I was—of course

to them the actual lines were totally obscure.)

I look at my slim pack of days in store.

How shall we occupy ourselves? We’ll put down roots.

Has the plant flowered? Has it run to seed?

Almost unseemly to inspect this colour-weave!

Let’s put down roots into this ashy foreign soil,

so they descend through the black sphere below,

and sprout,

if not as gluey leaf in the land I once called home,

then as a scrawny shoot

poked through cracked asphalt, fag ends, fragments, gobs of goo.

Torvaianica

Torvaianica

It turns out, everything can be repeated.
For me a second birth once came to pass
near one of Rome’s dingy suburban beaches.
The new name now released to me was: Loss.

So then completely free I roamed round Rome, with
no memory, no money, and no shame!
Speaking my native Russian, only rhyming—
and it was sounding good as well. But then,

out from behind those statues with no noses,
those serried ranks of columns, I saw nod
a Jewish profile sporting sparse face fungus,
a hunchbacked, horn-racked spectre of the North.

Torvaianica

Imitation /

Imitation

Tart up death-facing man all you can,
in autumn he stands alone.
His pathetic gong (he served in the ranks)
swings on its orange ribbon.
For its no-camouflage tunic in the woods,
I pity the aspen tree.
This is some alien string I’ve touched,
alien vestment for me.
Imitation, of course! But can you recall,
where it’s from, of whom?
Reflected tree in a deep forest pool:
is that sort of stealing, too?
But reflection must also be imitation,
immersion of boughs into dark.
Just as the naked aspen’s vibration
is imitated by my red heart.

Stanzas /

Stanzas

The arrangement of the planets
and the dismal look of the coffee grounds
tell us there is no God and
the angels are not omnipotent.

And all other characters,
portents, signs and marks
don’t clarify crap,
only drown everything in obscurity.

All the thoughts in my mind
bob around and are disjointed,
and all my friends’ verses
are uncut and uncouth.

When I scurry about the city,
on business or out strolling,
I catch with my accustomed ear
from every side only the sound “uck”.

Overworked like a truck,
whimpering like an ailing bitch,
the language’s been stripped of grammar,
you can’t tell one sound from the next.

The fool yelling from a mile away,
and the windbag drawing you aside,
they’re all speaking emptiness,
the words flow into a funnel,

which gurgled, then was gone entirely,
already merged into a simple howl.
But a wing is still rustling,
fluttering overhead.
