Reading The Greek Anthology 

The Muses’ move, though, was a shocker,
’mid olive groves and cyclamen —
nicking those cows off Archilochus
and leaving him a lyre instead.

Since then the fellow’s earned his living
with words to sounding strings well set —
no more the cowbell clanking-clinking,
the mooing, and the flowers’ scent.

НАД ГРЕЧЕСКОЙ АНТОЛОГИЕЙ

Но музы поступили плохо,
среди олив и цикламен
украв коров у Архилоха
и лиру дав ему взамен.

Вот он с тех пор и заработал,
струн перебор с набором слов,
взамен позвякиванья ботал,
мычанья, запаха цветов.
